Weekly PM Newsletter - Vol. 7

šŸ‘‹ If youā€™re new to this newsletter - Welcome!

Whatā€™s new from Coach Pri?

  • Health Update: Iā€™ve missed writing this newsletter and sharing with all of you these past 4-5 weeks! Iā€™ve had respiratory sickness on and off since Feb, and in April things got worse.

  • Iā€™m happy to report that Iā€™ve made a 100% recovery, and am back to doing what I love - working with clients! (and this newsletter will be back to it's weekly cadence again).

  • šŸ¤© Celebrating a milestone - The total views of videos I created with Stanford Online to help PMs with interviews (my content, their studio!) have reached 81k views total šŸ˜€ !! Check them out in PM interview tips section below..

  • Completed my 4th PM cohort at Stanford: Iā€™ve finished coaching the spring PM Accelerated program cohort at Stanford!

This means Iā€™ve now taught PM skills to over 400 people, from 15+ countries, including at Stanford, Product School, and through my own business!
If youā€™re a recent Stanford program grad reading this, congrats! šŸ‘ Please reach out and schedule a free career brainstorm call - Iā€™d love to meet you, and see if or how I can help fast-track your career!

  • ā€œFast-track your PM Careerā€ - Group Coaching Program - Iā€™m kicking off this program afresh - the dates are May 27 - July 12.

Limited spots are remaining (max group size = 10-12). More info at the bottom of this email..

  • Website launch: I had to put my website work on hold with the health challenges, but Iā€™m close! Planning to launch in the next few days!

šŸ˜® Did you know that I can help you get employer reimbursement for my coaching programs? As me how!

Product Management News & Industry Trends

  • Increasing expectations for PMs to drive WTP: Willingness to pay (WTP) is the maximum amount that customers are ready to pay for a product, while willingness to accept (WTA) is the minimum amount that would satisfy a seller. WTP helps SaaS companies choose optimal prices for their products, and prioritize features or evaluate feasibility of new initiatives.

Given the current market landscape of increased competition, PMs who understand WTP and what drives it are in demand, and if you are good at customer/user adoption, even better! Read more about WTP and how to improve this metric.

  • Fractional PMs: Many years ago, getting an APM role, or an internship were the only ways to transition to PM (apart from rare cases like me who transitioned from other roles such as Program Management). Enter, the emerging role of a ā€œFractional PMā€. If youā€™re an Aspiring PM, consider applying to these roles, as your gateway to a full time PM role at a larger or top 10 tech company, or start-up.

  • The AI News Wars: 8 major U.S. Newspapers are suing OpenAI Microsoft for copyright infringement, on top of a similar case filed by The New York Times against both companies. Google faces similar lawsuits. If youā€™re a PM working on AI-based products (which you will be in the next few years, if you arenā€™t already) - you also want to validate the data sources for your model training data, ensuring you have permission to use it officially. While lawsuits are no big deal for big tech companies, an AI startup could stand to lose a lot in such cases.

Hiring Updates

Whoā€™s hiring for PM roles (U.S. + Globally)?

I know that looking for a job is hard! So here are specific links to hiring manager or recruiter posts, that give you an insiderā€™s edge while applying..

Upcoming Product Conferences (May-June)

  1. The Women-in-Product or WIP conference is coming up soon (May 14-15), with the theme of ā€œEvolve & Excelā€!

I donā€™t have my conference tickets yet, but I do have my tickets to a local, in-person, WIP post-conference after-party here in San Jose! Email me if youā€™d like to join!

While researching WIP, I came across this very insightful article on how and why we ended up with such a lack of women PMs in tech.

  2. The Product-led summit is coming up in Vegas!

  3. ProductCon New York is coming up - as a past Product School instructor I do get a few free passes to these events usually that I give away to clients or friends. Look out for any updates in this newsletter in the next 2 weeks!

  4. And if youā€™re in Paris, the city of lights, there is the La Product Conf coming up on the 15th of May!

P.S. If you are working full time, ask your manager to sponsor these! Not all conferences are great (do not over-invest). Talk to people whoā€™ve been at that conference!
P.P.S. One of my clients said that they wasted so many precious $$ on conferences, that they wish they had instead used in working longer with me as a coach, since they found the value to be wayy higher! šŸ˜Š

PM Career/Interview Tips of the Week

I collaborated with Stanford Online in the spring of 2023 to create several videos for their channel, (my content, their studio and production)ā€¦

Two of those videos are shorts about Product Strategy, that elusive PM topic that everyone seems so confused about šŸ˜ One of these Product Strategy shorts has 21K views, so sharing them both below..

  • Watch this YouTube video on ā€œTips on how to answer a Product Strategy question in an interviewā€ā€¦AND

  • This video which covers ā€œAn example of answering Product Strategy interview questionsā€.

Note: While these videos above are great, they are too short for me to dig deeper into Product Strategy, but I do plan to make more long-form, case-study videos about this topic on my own Youtube channel!

Are you ready to deep dive into the ocean of Product Strategy? šŸ˜… If yes, check out Gibson Biddleā€™s (ex-VP of Netflix) talk on Youtube. Or, read his blog.

If you want to read about a separate but related topic, monetization strategy - check out my Medium blog on that topic!

šŸ’„ What are your biggest challenges in answering Product Strategy questions? Please reply to this email and share with me!
