Product Management News & Industry Trends

• Specialist vs Generalist PM - Companies are moving towards specialized PM roles, and away from generalized ones. Think about where you already have domain or industry or tech. expertise, and highlight that to be seen as a specialist PM. If you’re wondering what different types of specialized PM roles exist - read my blog.

• Inclusive Product Design - This is a growing area in the past few years, and this year with the use of Gen AI, this is being embraced faster by companies. Check out this article about Google’s head of Product inclusion, or this one to learn more about this topic.

• The career growth challenge for PMs: The 280Group published it’s global PM benchmark survey results from about 5700 PMs. One key challenge that emerged was - the difficulty for PMs to develop leadership skills on the job. This further fuels my passion to offer practical, cohort based leadership training programs for PMs.

Hiring and Layoffs

The latest on layoffs:

Cisco, Instacart, Paramount, Mozilla, Pure Storage and Toast were among the companies that declared layoffs in the past 2 weeks. Check out more info on this site. (Why am I sharing this? So that you can save yourself time, and avoid applying for roles here!)

Who’s hiring for PM/UX/Data roles (in the U.S.)?

I know that looking for a job is hard! Here are specific links to Linkedin posts or job listings from hiring managers in my network, to make it easy for you 😅 

• Walmart is hiring PMs for eCommerce, Personalization and other areas - connect with the hiring manager - Sonia Singh.

• MongoDB here in the bay area is hiring for PM, PMM and other roles.

• Waymo (autonomous driving) is hiring PMs.

• Coupang is hiring for AI/ML PMs and data scientists.

PM Case Study Review of the Week

Medium’s Challenge: Determining whether the “Highlights” feature added value.

• As a writer on Medium, I thought I’d highlight this case study this week about the “Highlights” feature, and also because our topic for the Stanford PM course last week was Product Success Metrics!

Problem: The Medium PM team needed a metric that would tell them whether the “Highlights” feature made user interactions better/more rewarding.

Solution:

• Shifted their focus to one crucial metric rather than multiple “vanity metrics”.

• Decided to measure the success of this new feature (“highlights”) based on the metric of Total Time Reading (TTR).
