Product Management News & Industry Trends

  • Googleā€™s Gemini Fiasco: It was a very interesting week last week - Googleā€™s Gemini (rebranded from ā€œBardā€) generated incorrect historical images leading to Google having to pull out this feature. The Sr. Director of Product for Google in charge of this product, was harassed online and had to disable all of their social media accounts. All the politics of this aside - this is a helpful case study of ā€œover-emphasisā€ in ML models that tried to overcome the diversity problem but via a misplaced solution. Letā€™s watch and learn as all this unfolds. Read more.

  • The EU AI Act: This has been in the works since the summer of 2023, and is still in draft mode. You can read a summary of it here - https://artificialintelligenceact.eu/high-level-summary/. This will be similar to GDPR in some ways, but broader, and at some point will become a key part of a PMā€™s job responsibility, requiring close collaboration with product policy and legal teams.

Hiring and Layoffs

The latest on layoffs:

Snap (parent company of Snapchat), Docusign, Zoom, and Okta were among the companies that declared layoffs last week. Check out more info about Layoffs on this site.

Whoā€™s hiring for PM/UX/Data roles (in the U.S.)?

I know that looking for a job is hard! Here are specific links to LinkedIn posts or job listings from hiring managers in my network, to make it easy for you šŸ˜…

Check out this job board for more open roles. For those of you looking for a PM job in non-private sectors, the #PublicSectorJobBoard provides you with a weekly digest of US-based government jobs in #tech and #innovation.

PM Case Study Review of the Week

Clubhouse - I came across this very interesting Product Psychology case study on the drop-in-audio, and exclusive invite-only app that is Clubhouse. Lots of interesting insights on user behavior, user onboarding and delivering value early.

Here are some insights I gained from this case study:

  1. Scarcity can be an important strategy to create excitement for your product, but an excellent user on-boarding experience is still key for retention.

  2. Adding value through your product first is very important - before you ask the user to take any specific in-app action such as ā€œfollowing 25 peopleā€.

  3. It is hard and complex to present the user with the right ā€œfeedā€ or ā€œpersonalized contentā€ when the content is live, as in with Clubhouse.

You can follow the full case study (warning, this is a fun one šŸ˜… , and takes a whole 5 minutes) here.

PM Interview Tip of the Week

šŸ‘€ How to master the ā€œTell me about yourselfā€ questions for PM Interviews!

You might be spending a lot of time preparing for product strategy, product sense, execution or behavioral PM interviews, and yet, one question most of my clients struggle with is ā€œTell me about yourselfā€.

How you answer this first question sets the tone of the entire interview! šŸ˜Ž Are you an expert? Are you an apologizer? Can you confidently own your story? Do you sound like someone who can drive results? This is your elevator pitch - so practice it well!

  • Watch this YouTube short I created to help you with answering this question! If you want to learn more about this topic - read this.

  • What are your biggest challenges in PM interviews? Please reply to this email and share with me, I would love to know (and I always have free resources to help šŸ˜‰ )!
