Product Management News & Industry Trends

• AI-led PM productivity: Product Managers are starting to think about which parts of the PM Lifecycle/Process can they optimize with AI. Ethical considerations about AI objectivity also need to be considered.

• UX or CX Focus: Companies who start to focus on AI/ML too much but lose touch with the most important user needs, are struggling.

• ‘Emotional Fitness’ Training is emerging: While PMs will use AI for several day-to-day tasks, they will need to get better at leadership and communication skills, since those are the skills AI is not (yet) good at. 😇 I’m launching a Group PM leadership training program to help with this - learn more.

Hiring and Layoffs

The latest on layoffs:

TikTok, Amazon, Twitch, Discord, eBay, SAP, Google, and Instagram were among the many companies that declared layoffs this year, starting Jan 1st, 2024. Check out more info on this site.

PM Case Study Review of the Week

StitchFix - I’ve been fascinated by the rise and fall of Stitchfix, the personal styling company. They went IPO in 2017, and during the pandemic trends of online buying, led successful monetization through a focus on personalization powered by machine learning and data science.

So what led to the fall of Stitchfix post-pandemic?

1. Macro-economic trends such as a return to in-store buying

2. Cannibalisation of their signature “style-in-a-box” products by their new “freestyle” products, which customers can directly buy from their website.

3. Being unclear about the key customer segments they want to serve.

There are a lot of lessons learned from the StitchFix case study. If you are a PM and analytics nerd like me, check out this microsite that walks through their data science algorithms across the user journey.
