Product Management News & Industry Trends

  • Take a photo or keep a photo?!: That is the question Meta is refusing to answer about itā€™s AI powered Ray-Ban sunglasses. These Ray-Bans have a discreet camera on the front, for taking photos not just when you ask them to, but also when their AI features trigger it with certain keywords such as ā€œlook.ā€ But the company wonā€™t commit to keeping these images private. Read more.

  • The growing problem of returns: If youā€™re following retail industry news, you might notice that many retailers are quietly changing their return policies - including Amazon. 49% of retailers are claiming returns is a big issue for them, compared to just a year or two ago when that number was 2%! And, if youā€™re interviewing for any company that is a retailer or has retail customers, you might want to be prepared to address some PM solution ideas to this problem (would be a great case study šŸ˜‰).   • Space Tech: TechCrunch is hosting itā€™s Disrupt conference next month in SF, and theme is Space stage, which sounds exciting at first, but alarming on second thoughts. One startup claims to extend our daylight time by putting satellites with mirrors in space, literally trying to alter night and day. Messing with nature could have dire consequence - so weā€™ve already seen with climate change all around us, and now weā€™re about to do the same with space! šŸ«£

I know that looking for a job is hard! So here are specific links to hiring manager or recruiter posts from people in my network, that give you an insiderā€™s edge while applying..

  • Roblox is hiring a Sr Product Manager, Brand Platform - here is the hiring managerā€™s post.

  • Zillow is hiring for a Sr and a Principal PM role, if youā€™re into real estate, AI, and/or CRM. Check out this HMā€™s post.

  • Github is hiring a Sr Product Marketing Manager, for platform and enterprise, focused on GTM strategies. Here is the HMā€™s post.

  • Walmart is hiring for several PM roles since it is completely transforming itā€™s marketplace, a friend who works there explained to me this weekend. The focus is on sellers directly fulfilling orders instead of Walmart being the ā€˜middle-personā€™, similar to Amazon. And hence all the PM hiring! I suggest connecting with this hiring manager, or check out this Staff PM role under this HM.

  • Toast - the restaurant ordering platform, is hiring a Principal PM. Here is the HMā€™s post.

PM Career/Interview Tips of the Week

šŸ’„ We are in week 5 of the PM Level-Up Group Program - and our topic of the week is Product Execution/Delivery!

Hereā€™s what skills get tested in these interview questions (varies slightly based on seniority level):

  • Cross functional collaboration for product delivery

  • Defining success metrics for a product

  • Measuring success metrics for a product post launch

  • Iterative product improvements based on customer feedback & success metrics

  • Navigating complex trade-offs and how you as a PM manage trade-offs

  • Leading QBRs (Quarterly Business Reviews) with internal business stakeholders

  • Leading OKRs (Operations Key Results) with execs

  • Your ability to review ongoing success metrics and diagnose problem

  • Agile delivery - level of details on this vary based on the level

  • Go-to-market details for a product - how will you launch it?

  • Your technical knowledge - level of questions depends on how technical the role is, and also the seniority of the role/level.
