Weā€™re organizing our very first community mixer next month, right here in Berryessa, San Jose! Capacity will be limited (~30 people). We will have a roundtable discussion/Q&A on a specific PM-relevant topic (~30 minutes), with open networking afterwards. More to come on this!

My goal/vision for this is simple - building real-life connections, and learning together as a supportive, fun PM community, in a safe, respectful environment.

šŸ¤  If youā€™re interested to learn more, join this event, or volunteer to help - reply back with the word ā€œnetworkingā€ and Iā€™ll make sure you stay updated about this!

  • Reminder - Friday Oct 11 (12 -1 pm PST) - Meditation Workshop for PMs: It takes more than just a great resume and PM or Interview skills to succeed in todayā€™s job market - it takes resilience & mental strength!

šŸ«¶ Our guest will be Marni Heinz - former sales exec at Salesforce, a certified coach, and meditation instructor trained with - Tara Brach & Jack Cornfield! Marni will lead us through a guided meditation on a topic which is so relevant for all product managers!

Product Management News & Industry Trends

  • AI wins the Nobel Prize: Winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics are machine learning pioneers John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton. While building neural network based models for image and music recognition at Columbia University in 2004, I always thought of AI as Mathematics(it was more Predictive AI at the time, not Generative AI). So if youā€™re like me and wondering where the Physics part comes in - check out the full article.

Or, if you just want to get a laugh out of the irony of it all - how the professor struggled to believe his call from the Nobel committee in Sweden was real and not a deep fake šŸ˜‚ - check out this tweet.

  • Impact of AI on the PM job: Iā€™ve been thinking a lot lately about how AI will impact different aspects of a PMā€™s day-to-day job. Iā€™ve even proposed talks and podcasts with some collaborators on this topic.

Hereā€™s what I see coming: The so called ā€œhard skillsā€ of PM-ing (Product Strategy, Vision, Design, Roadmapping, PRD etc.), will be largely performed or heavily facilitated by AI, whereas the so-called ā€œsoft skillsā€ - i.e. negotiation, building cross-functional relationships, and giving critical feedback (if youā€™re a leader) will become more ā€œhuman-centeredā€.

So - if youā€™re thinking of investing in your career and skills, pick a program that covers both - the ā€œhard skillsā€ and the ā€œsoft skillsā€, and build your EQ as much as a your IQ, so you can be ready for the future šŸ˜

This is why I keep talking about mindset, self-care, emotional intelligence, and more, because I know this will help differentiate you as a great PM! And, this is why Iā€™m including mindset skills in our 8-week coaching program šŸ˜‰ I want clients like you to succeed not just in 2024-2025, but be ready for the next 5-10 years. And, it turns out Lenny agrees with me!

PM Career & Interview Tips of the Week!

šŸ’„ We are in week 6 of the PM Level-Up Group Program - and our topic of the week is Product Success Metrics!

šŸ¤“ Here are some themes of PM Interview questions that appear on this topic:

  • Defining success metrics for a product

  • ā€œRoot cause analysis (RCA)ā€ or ā€œMetrics Debuggingā€ questions.

  • Two success metrics going in two different directions (contra-indicators)

  • Making a product-related decision (based on success metrics)

  • Evaluating trade-offs (use metrics to evaluate the trade-offs)

šŸ”„ Here are my 5 tips as a PM Coach to help you stand out in your product success metrics interviews:

  1. Clarify upfront what stage is your product is in

  2. Define which steps in your user journey does value realization happen, and set success metrics for those areas

  3. Be aware of different kinds of metrics - leading, lagging, counter, vanity and proxy metrics!

  4. Don't forget to define counter metrics!

  5. Stay curious - instead of making assumptions, ask intelligent questions to the interviewer that demonstrate you can think like a great PM!
