PM Interview Tips of the Week - Product Planning - Roadmaps, Prioritization & Trade-offs!

Hiring managers want to know: Can you make smart product decisions with limited time and resources? In product sense, design, or execution interviews, hiring managers often test your ability to turn strategy into an actionable roadmap, prioritize effectively using data, and demonstrate that you can drive the product forward.

Here’s how to stand out:

  • Start with the goal
    Before listing ideas, clarify what you're solving for. What's the user need or key metric?

  • Demonstrate divergence and convergence

    • Diverge: Think broadly and generate multiple ideas (use methods like Crazy 8s, Jobs-to-be-Done, or user journey mapping to help you think of many different user problems, or different product features).

    • Converge: Prioritize using a clear framework like Impact/Effort or Kano. Be ready to explain how you define and apply "impact."

  • Be data-informed, not just data-driven
    Use both quantitative data (e.g. adoption, satisfaction) and qualitative input (e.g. user feedback, stakeholder insights) to guide decisions.

  • Explain tradeoffs
    Show you can make tough choices. What did you not build—and why? What’s the short-term vs. long-term impact?

  • Tie it all back to the strategy
    Your roadmap or MVP should align with the product vision, user goals, and business outcomes.
