Product Management News & Industry Trends

  • The rise of the growth PM: These roles are increasing as market confidence starting to return, and companies want to hire product managers who can help them grow and scale to the next level. So if you have experience in this area - go for growth! šŸ˜‰

HubSpot, Salesforce, TikTok, Amazon, Atlassian, MongoDB, AI Digital, CrowdStrike & Adobe, among others, have hired the most for growth roles in recent months. Checkout this website for live job market data & insights.

  • Industries that are hiring: Healthcare, security, trust & safety, education, some finance/fintech and manufacturing & distribution.

  • Return-to-work mandates: Amazon employees (many of them parents!) are of course planning for their Option B given the 5-day return to work mandates. If youā€™re at Amazon & wondering if it makes sense to start job-searching for a more flex role outside - letā€™s talk. There are lots of openings for people with an Amazon PM skillset! And - hereā€™s a list of remote job remote job boards šŸ˜ƒ

  • Trust & Safety are top-of-mind: You might have heard of KOSA (kids online safety act) which has officially passed the senate, and requires digital products to be ā€œsafe by designā€ and not-inducing or causing addiction for kids and teens. And COPPA 2.0 (Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act) is coming. As a mom of an almost 13-year old, Iā€™m quite happy about this - although how it will be implemented in practice is yet to be seen.

PM Career/Interview Tips of the Week

šŸ’„ We are in week 4 of the PM Level-Up Group Program - and our topic of the week is Product Design & Product Sense!

Hereā€™s what you need to prepare for these interview questions:
1. Market estimation - understand TAM, SAM, SOM & related concepts. Know your numbers - world population, US population, how much of the world has internet, etc.
2. User segmentation - what is the best way to segment the target market?
3. User journey mapping
4. Understanding user needs and problems
5. Product Design & Prototyping basics
5. Usability testing
6. Collaborating with UX design, user researchers and others
7. High level knowledge of what is design thinking (and what it isnā€™t!)
8. A/B Testing
9. Information Architecture/Collaboration with architects to design the product
10. Show your prioritization & data-informed decision making skills to share what product you will decide to build, and how will you build it!

šŸ§  Pro-tip: Know that Product Sense is overall - across the PDLC (product development lifecycle) - e.g. can you discover user problems, figure out the target market, figure out which problems are most important to solve for, decide what makes sense to build, figure out how to design it, build it and launch it? Whereas Product Design hones in more on the design aspects.

Make sure to understand company culture, operating model, their interview style and expectations, to help you prepare in the right way!
