  • PM Conferences: There are a few fall conferences coming up:

    • Iā€™m heading to ProductCon, Product Schoolā€™s conference in SF tomorrow Oct 16th - so in case you plan to be there, come say hi! šŸ‘‹ 

    • Lennyā€™s Summit is coming up Oct 24th - next Thursday - excited to host a roundtable with senior Product Leaders - on the topic of Career Growth and Leadership! If you plan to be there, Iā€™d love to meet you, and if you donā€™t - look into it. They might still need volunteers or round table leaders - so apply to join!

    • And if you feel like you want to attend more conferences next year - nowā€™s the time to start planning!

  • Growing PM areas: I see a growing demand for Cybersecurity PMs and Data PMs - so make sure to learn more about these areas, and see if it makes sense for you to target these kinds of roles!

PM Career/Interview Tips of the Week

šŸ’„ We are in week 7 of the PM Level-Up Group Program - and our topic of the week is Leadership and Behavioral Interview Questions!

Hereā€™s WHY behavioral interview questions are SO IMPORTANT:

  1. How you tell the story of your accomplishments helps the interviewer know if you are a good story-teller (or not šŸ˜‰), and can you be put in front of executives if hired, and be trusted to do a great job at telling your productā€™s story!

  2. They play a role in deciding your level or calibration - if you can confidently and succinctly answer these questions, you are more likely to get an offer at a higher PM level.

  3. They reassure the interviewer that you have the right personality traits, skills and characteristics that if hired, you will excel or succeed in the role. Just because someone has good core PM skills does not make them a right fit for the job - you also need to demonstrate that you have the right personality, attitude, emotional intelligence, creativity and grit - to be a great PM!

You may already be familiar with the STAR or STAR-L (STAR + Learnings) framework for these questions - however some of my clients asked me for something more easy and intuitive for us PMs - so I came up with a new method!

  • BUPARL - (ā€œboo paa relā€  šŸ‘», right in time for Halloween!)

    • B = Business Goals and North Star Metrics

    • U = Users and their unmet needs, or biggest problems!

    • P = The product you designed/built/launched to solve unmet user needs/problems! WHY did this product need to be built?

    • A = Actions you took to accomplish what was needed (e.g. you aligned people on the roadmap, you pivoted your product strategy, you resolved cross-functional conflicts etc.) - show youā€™re a GREAT PM!

    • R = Results or Outcomes + Impact

    • L = What did you learn from this? And how do you do things differently now?
